Barbara and All,

Oh, that is wonderful news! Thank you so much for that information. We
will all be waiting to see the 'brags' on this!

Isn't there an individual test that can be done for documentation or is that
just one for diagnosis only... I am hoping we can get cleared dogs and bitches
'in the spotlight' soon!

Now, come on everyone, get your studs tested! [Girls too!] It's all of
our futures at stake!

Bless you for that news Barb, how do we donate individually to this fantastic
effort?

Ileana,
This is the most inspirational post I have ever read on this list!!!! Thank
you from the bottom of my heart!!! I am sick to death of reading about
'mediocre' and 'vote' and 'you are no one if you haven't at least produced a
Select'
and on and on -

I will say here and now that one of my main concerns in trying to breed sound
dogs was to try to ensure healthy puppies for myself and everyone else who
got the 'non show quality' ones in a litter.

How do you do this and get all the loveliness of side gait [ and other things
you would think take precedence over basic health essentials - from what is
posted usually on this list [again, you have never produced a select so you are
a nobody - which is just bunk]] if no one will test for the things we CAN
test for - like Degenerative Myeleopathy for instance..[along with hearts,
thyroid, eyes, etc.]....and let us all know the status.... ??? It can be bred
away
from, but only if you know.

I recently contacted the OFA to try to determine HOW to access their records
[from the CHIC list page] for dogs that had tested CLEAR of the gene for DM
via the 'FLASH TEST'. Their amazing answer was that NO ONE HAD SUBMITTED A
SINGLE GSD for testing clear of it to them. I know they are out there -
somewhere???

In my often humble opinion, but not always humble, I think that if we aren't
careful the breed will be so 'infested' with that gene and we will all be in
trouble. Winning isn't everything!!! Please, someone test your stud dogs and
brood bitches and LIST them somewhere that the ordinary person [ 'who may not
be
among those who "all know" '] can have access to that information. Please!

Too bad the 'Conditional' class is no more - we could have offered it to dogs
with all health clearances available today. Frankly, I would prefer to breed
to a dog that maybe wasn't the best front in existence or had the most
sweeping side gait in the universe, but to a NORMAL dog who was as healthy as I
could
find. And that would include 'Therapy Dogs' which some of mine are.

It is, I believe, more important than coat, color, ears or guns...... All of
those can be seen early on [guns shy and ears] if not at birth [color and
coat] - DM, on the other hand, apparently sneaks up on you after your heart is
totally involved and it must be a terrible thing to endure the slow decline and
look on helplessly of a noble dog that IS your heart.... die a slow death...[ a
rescue dog here recently lost her battle with it bringing it to the surface
in our club]

Stability and health are good goals and, I believe, are the most important -
if you do love the breed and wish it to BE the best, lets all strive to do all
the health checks we can.... and make them public and easily accessable, like
in a searchable list for CLEAR dogs and bitches.

Respectfully to all, and Thanks Ileana

Louise and All: None of the dogs , well over 300, who sent in their blood
samples, for DM, have yet been tested, as the Funding is being worked on to
accomplish this test. But all the samples are ready and waiting and when the
funding comes thru they will all undergo the test!! Hopefully that will occur
very soon.Which is GREAT news for the Breed.. For further information on
this, you can contact Marjorie Zimmerman who is the GSDCA H & G Committee
spokeswoman for Dr. Clemmons and the DM Research..She has gotten some
incredible
donations, to be auctioned for the Funding...Including a Diamond Pendant and
earrings... PLUS>>>>>>>>>> You will hear lots more in the very near future!!!
