I had a hard time deciding whether or not I would get into this discussion. I only have one experience with any AI's We took our girl to a repo specialist near Dallas. She had a physical before her season, all the blood work, everything was fine. We did the progesterone tests, everything was a go. We did the transcervical, watched it on the camera, the works, I was with her. I was concerned that it wasn't sterile enough but was reassured that she(the vet)?had done this with her own show dogs,Danes, for many years. I was concerned that the sperm in the second straw looked "funny", we did fresh chilled and got it shipped overnight, 3 times. Again, she said it didn't have the same motility as the first but was still fine. Again, this was my first(and only) time. The 3 rd straw was insisted on by the co-owner. Fine, ok, lets do it. Well the 3rd time the straw looked much better and the vet checked the motility(?) and said it was 87 %, great. Well, long story short...no puppies and 5 months later my bitch is dead. Myocarditis caused by a bacterical infection is what the ecropsy said. I can not prove that the AI was the cause, but it is the only "different" thing in her life. She was 4 yrs old and healthy. I personally will never do another AI period, not implanted, not transcervical. If I can't breed naturally, I will pass on the breeding. If I can't get my girl to the male I want her with, the breeding won't happen. This is not?a statement of what is right and what is wrong, this is my painful experience and my own personal out look on AI's Never say Never(which is what I named my Saydee) Pam Msg: #1 in digest Subject: Re: Trans-cervical insemination Date: Thu, 18 Jun 2009 20:25:35 -0400 From: barbara17236@xxxxxxx I would like to comment on the whole bacteria fear.? What is my qualification?? I work for one of the top Labradors breeders in the country.? I have seen it all, and been part of it, too.? I have attended reproduction seminars...thanks to my boss:) There will always be bacteria (normal) on the outside of the vagina, and rectum of bitches.? Well, unless you scrub them thoroughly with a disinfectant prior to breeding - not a good idea.? There is bacteria (normal) on the male's rectum, boy hairs, and penis.? How many of us have watched a male and female like each others rectums, only to turn around and each others private parts?? How about dogs who eat poop, and turn around and like their private parts, or your face? Bacteria enters your girl's vagina when the male penatrates her, and the sperm flow right through, and?into the cervix, naturally.? We have had?numerous surgical implantations done, and, luckily, not one resulted in an infection.? I have no experience with Trans-Cervical AIs but would not hesitate to have one don, if needed.? This is my choice. We have performed countless A.I.s with no problems. Each breeder should do what they feel is right for their dogs.? One procedure may work better for one person but not another.? You have to find what works for you, and what you feel comfortable with it. JMO I hope? I said this so it makes sense.??? I couldn't locate the orginal post in my email mess.
