Mike, This is extremely interesting to me. I have printed out your recipe and am going to try it. I don't have any GSD's with allergy problems but our little rescue mixed breed does. Do you put the wheat germ in the mixture or do you sprinkle it on individually? Can I substitute jack mackeral for fresh fish? Can you use this with puppies? Can I add blueberries??When you say a touch of raw hamburger, do you mean like a 6 oz meatball or more or less? I feed my dogs a little kibble, my "dog stew" and a touch of raw hamburger meat each night. I learned my dog stew from Judy Eckland and Diane Strasser. I think even Lissa Cunningham perfected the method with the crockpot theory. here is what i calll my dog stew. Take a whole chicken throw it in a crockpot and cook it for about 2-3 days. Bones and all, throw it in there and let it cook. When it starts to get "mushy" keep "mashing it down" and add a cup of water to it. Skin, bones, and all. (I have an assistant that likes to fish, so I have been adding one whole freshwater fish and cooking it with the chicken). On the stove, I take a package of Long grain Brwon rice (white is fine if you dont have it) and a package of Barley (quick barley is fine if you dont find the other) and a couple of cups of oatmeal and cook and mix. I also take a couple of carrots, fresh pumpkin (now that its in season) and an iron source like Broccoli and pouree it in my blender and pour it in the Rice/Barley/Oatmeal Mixture. When the chicken is done and cooled, add into the barley/rice mixture and stir for all you are worth. This is a great supplement that combines your meat source, calcium (from the bones) fish oil and products (from the fish), your rice and barley as your fillers the carrots and pumpkin provide my vitaman C and A and your Iron source is from the marrow and the broccoli. Also, when you are cooking for you pets, you control it and you know whats in it. the skin provides the fat source et. Now when I feed, I give like a cup of kibble, a cup of the stew and a touch of raw hamburger meat and my viatman e source comes from wheat germ. Here recently, i had a bitch with a snotty problem from allergies, I have mixed a touch of local whole raw honey (found down the street from a lady who keeps bees) and I havent had any issues with morning snottiness from this bitch. I feed less kibble, you can tell from the dogs coat and vitality they are doing well, and the poops are hard and firm. Essentially I like the control over the diet, I like the fact I dont feed as much and I love the results. Sure its a pain in the arse to make and when I do, I usually have a messy kitchen but, what I also do is make enough for a few weeks and then freeze what Im not using. Its great.
