In all of these posts (good ones ) concerning movement, few have referred to suspension as opposed to "busy". I do not believe you can have both in the same dog. If those legs are moving like pistons, there can be no drive, thus no suspension. In one class at the national there were two males one behind the other who were a "text book" comparison of this difference. They both looked like they were reaching; they were both impressive males, and they were both going at the same speed. However, one had that piston like movement, taking virtually two steps to each one step of the dog in front of him. What is it about "covering the maximum amount of ground with the MINIMUM number of steps" (emphasis mine) that can possibly be unclear in our standard ? And why cannot folks see this even when the dog is not racing at mach speed ? Our standard states "At a walk, it covers a great deal of ground with long stride------" Nowhere does it indicate that the faster the dog goes the more busy the legs. Quite the reverse : the more drive, the more effortless the movement. These days, many of the dogs are worked on a treadmill. This is good exercise if the treadmill is set at a slow, easy speed rather than, as is often the case, used to teach the dog to move increasingly faster. Judges used to reward that easy effortless movement and some still do ; all judges should.
