The chain on its own seems innocuous enough...just a largish chain attached to a ring that had been drilled into the concrete portion of the garage wall...can you see it? Its rings glistening in the early morning light? The garage door groans open to reveal its sole contents; a crate, rusted from years of use...and the dog who was its prisoner. The door of the crate is opened and a reluctant German Shepherd...sixty pounds of bone and fur is hauled unceremoniously out by his scruff. His fur is bleached by the sun; moth eaten and filthy...can you smell what he smelled? The stench of urine so over powering that breathing was painful? Large uncaring hands lead him to his place on the wall..a patch of asphalt with no respite from the elements; open to the blistering heat of the sun in summer...no shelter from the driving rains or winter snows...He is slaked with thirst, but there is no bucket to be had; no clean bowl of food offered. Some scraps from the evening meal are thrown at his feet and he is grateful to fill the void in his aching stomach. Can you hear the sound of the "SNAP" as it clamps onto his worn leather collar? He watches as his owner walks away, going inside for his early morning meal...the smells wafting from the house makeing him drool with hunger...Can you feel the aching pain of a dog that has never known a toy...a soft bed..a full stomach..the joy of chasing a ball..the feel of grass under his feet? Now, imagine that this is YOUR DOG... The dog you have nurtured and cared for since his puppy hood... This dog was a puppy once too...a black and red ball of fluff and kisses and puppy breath; totally trusting his human; playing with his siblings in the whelping box..adored by his dam....until the fateful day that he was placed into the hands of a monster....and this noble German Shepherd Dog was chained to a wall where he remained for two years. He had nothing to stimulate him...no dog house...there was no evidence of food or water when he was rescued this past weekend. His anal glands were severely impacted..his lack of muscle mass causes difficulty in walking....His foster mom Jodi, shivers when she touches him...he is nothing more than a skeleton. The name Thor hardly suits him...he has all but given up on life. We can only hope that with time, he will forgive the sins that have been visited upon him and allow us to show him what life CAN be. For now, he is learning what a door is...why linoleum shines...the playful pat of another dog...and love. He is learning that above all....he is loved. THIS is what you donations are accomplishing....for without them, thirty two dogs may never have had another tomorrow.... With our deepest gratitude......
