I bought a lot a few years back with the intention of building a house with
attached indoor-outdoor exercise areas for the dogs. It was 35 agricultural
acres several miles out, bordered by a freeway with only 1 neighbor for
miles who had a small hobby farm and no objection to dogs.
Their limit was 4 dogs but I got a kennel license for 12 from the township
because they looked at the slope of the land and how the noise would go
toward the freeway. They liked that I planned to keep the rest of the land
cropped.
However, the county stepped in and said the nearest house had to be further
than 1500 feet. According to their satellite maps the house was only 1300
fee away. No exceptions to the rule. I couldn't apply for a variance until
the house was built and they were likely to turn it down. When I mentioned
that many farmers kept more than 4 dogs routinely, I was threatened with
"but they might not mind as much if we came in and took some of them away".
There was no limit to how many livestock could be housed on the 35 acres.
I sold the lot to a pig farmer..... Tee, hee.....
