This came over another list...since it could happen to any of us, I
thought I'd share. So here, with the author's permission, is something
to make you smile. (and maybe get out your vaccuum cleaners) (she's in
the UK, hence the pounds not dollars)

>My computer was real sick when I took it in to the doctor man. 'Come in to
>see me on Wednesday,' he said after I had explained that not only was there
>a strange whirring noise coming from it, but also a sort of scorching
>smell and that nothing now worked at all when I switched it on. I must
>say life was empty without it. Where there had been all kinds of mailings
>from all over the world, games and information, there was now a gaping
>black void.
>
>It seemed that from Monday to Wednesday was an absolute eternity, but it
>did of course arrive. The doctor man looked grave when he saw me. 'Tell
>me the worst, Paul.' I said. 'Yes,' he replied, 'but you have to be strong to
>take it.' OMG I thought as he sucked on his fingers and drew in a deep
>breath.
>
>Firstly, 'tell me if you have animals in your home' he asked? 'Yes' I
>said, 'dogs'. 'More than one?' 'Four with long hair' I told him with an
>awful sinking feeling right to the pit of my stomach. He then went on to
>explain that before checking inside the tower, he'd had to suck
>and pull out a full vacuum bag of IMPACTED DOG HAIR. 'Worst I've ever
>seen' he told me 'The motor's burned out trying to cope with them - now
>you must spend £200 to replace the server!'
>
>By this time all in the busy showroom were watching me intently, obviously
>shocked at how this little ole lady could let something so terrible happen
>to all that expensive technology, but worse was yet to come when I called
>to collect the new hardware a few long, empty days later.
>
>The shop was packed that fateful Saturday morning with students,
>housewives, businessmen with important looking expressions on their faces
>and a few humble looking housewives like me. At last I got to the front
>of the queue and Paul came out of the workshop proudly bearing the new
>tower. 'Promise me you won't let this die like the old one' he said 'you
>must suck out the debris from the back of it every couple of months'.
>There was a sudden and eerie silence all over the showroom. All eyes were
>upon me. 'Of course' I said, feeling myself flushing bright red and
>wishing the ground would open and swallow me and leaving the premises with
>my tail hanging limply between my legs.
>
>So now, new operating system and all, I'm back, much humbled and feeling
>very guilty. Will I ever live this down I ask myself? It will take a
>very long time I think!
