Hi Linda,
I agree with EVERYTHING you've said. Problems are genetic and colloidal
silver, et al are temporary bandaids. I also agree that the contributing
animals should be removed from the genetic pool. Late in the 1980's I
discovered that the line that I based my foundation stock on was rife with DM.
Well, that was the end of THAT line. And I started again.
Don't you think that some breeders hesitate to remove the certain studs from
the market? I really don't understand that at all.
My ONLY point was that if you know that your dog/bitch has a compromised immune
system, colloidal silver could help out him/her. I definitely do NOT mean that
said dog should be bred.

  Penny,

I understand that you would like to help your dogs and strengthen their
immune system, however your suggestions are a temporary solution. As are the
other remedies that give temporary relief to genetic problems. The only sure
cure is to seek out the contributors and alleviate them from the breeding pool.
This is not to just single you out, I am only answering your question ...
"Isn't that the name of the game?"

If these temporary remedies continue with no attempt to stop the problems, in
years to come our GSD will no longer look like it was meant to look nor will it
be capable of performing the tasks that it was bred to do.

I agree in most cases, it takes both the sire and the dam to carry these
genes to produce the problem, however when the genes are continuously passed
on, we will always have the problems as well as developing new ones.

Ten or fifteen years ago we may have had these same problems but they were
few are far between. Today many of them are quite common.

With that said .... I am sure I will get a lot of feed back.
