Joe Black was her Grandfather, on her colored dam's side. Joe Black's daughter
(colored) was bred to a white male. The white gene came from her white sire

Barb Hively - PA
DNA. It's what makes a white, a German Shepherd

Subject: [ SHOWGSD-L ] breeding "colors" and white

I read with interest Evan's post about the "colored" shepherd from a white dam,
especially since he said that the sire was Joe Black -- a dog I loved when I
saw him at a national. So much so that I bought a puppy of his a few months
later. But anyway ....

Were all of the puppies from that litter colored puppies? I'm assuming that
Joe Black did not carry the white gene. But further down the line, if any of
those puppies or their puppies or their puppies, etc., were bred to a white,
then some white progeny would result if the recessive white gene was present,
right? Just like the gene for solid black.
