[ SHOWGSD-L ] an Easterner looks at traffic

All I can tell you is to look at a map of Virginia/Maryland.
If you are in Manassas, VA, for a dog show or business meeting that won't
end before 4 or 5 pm, you are advised not to make reservations to fly home
until Saturday...because the traffic is horrendous in any direction - and if
it rains or there's an accident, you could be sitting in traffic that
doesn't move more than a few feet for 10 or 12 hours. and yes, it has
happened more than once.
No one with any experience at all will drive on Interstate 95 at any time
of day or night between Baltimore and Richmond.......because you might not
get where you're going for many hours. Given the actual distances you'd
think you could allow 60 or 90 minutes to get where you want to be...but
those of us who live here know better.
At least the California traffic moves...it may be bumper to bumper, but
I've not known it to stand still for hours at a time, which is not the least
bit unusual here.
I used to commute 23 miles from Woodbridge to my office in DC...and there
were days it took 2 hours. (those were days with no bad weather and no
accidents, just traffic) Most of the time it took just over an hour. No
exaggerating, believe me.
