Diane, Ok, I can understand the 9-1-1 calls about the peacocks.? I have responded to many of them out here.? During mating season, the peacock's calls sound like a woman screaming for help!? Unless you know what it is, it can be quite distressing.? Where I worked, we also have washes, concrete water disposals to prevent flooding.? These washes distort the sound which can carry a long way.? I can't tell you how many "screaming woman" calls we would get.? I didn't know, until I moved to this area, that the screaming woman was a peacock.? And now,?my neighbor and I are the happy adoptive parents of a very lonely peahen.? She shares our properties,?tries to find a male, lays eggs that don't hatch?and never leaves.? We are used to her now but I can sure remember waking up in the middle of the night, hearing that scream and wondering.?? I have sheep, a guardian donkey, chickens, guineas & a pair of peacocks on my property which is zoned ag. My neighbors have called 911 to report the peacocks twice. 911... for EMERGENCIES.... for peacock noise. They've reported me to the township and the state twice. One time the township wrote me a letter stating that I didn't have enough property to house sheep, I had 30 days to remove them. My lawyer pointed out that I had enough land, that the house was on one tax parcel, the vacant land on another. No 'sorry' letter was sent. They wrote about peacocks violating the noise ordinance. My lawyer pointed out the ordinance had no wording on decible levels. Its language was for parties & music. The township wrote & informed me that peacocks were not farm animals nor were they pets. I had 30 days to remove them. According to Michigan's Right to Farm act, peacocks were fowl & fowl was farmable (for chicks & feathers). The township didn't send a 'sorry' letter with that one either. In my experience, the Right to Farm act, designed to help MI farmers against idiot neighbors does nothing of the sort. I'm only "protected" by them after they come out & inspect & give suggestions to modify your farm. If the farmer bends over backwards to meet with the state's recommendations and STILL the complaintants are unhappy, THEN the RtF department tells the complainers to get a life. When they came out to my farm, they suggested I put eaves on the barn and then an underground system to channel rainwater away from the barn. The problem was that the rain falls off the roof & lands on poop, making poopy mud. Another brilliant suggestion was to fence off the barn so the animals couldn't loiter around it (pooping). Fence off the lean-to on the barn, built for animals to loiter under because they pooped there. Move the water tank from under the lean-to to somewhere else so they wouldn't be near the barn. (Hello... the water source is near the barn!) I had built the barn to house & protect the animals & the state was telling me that to keep the neighbors happy I should not allow the animals to access the barnyard!! Insane. The neighbors have been quiet so far this year. Well, not complaining. Mr Neighbor screamed peacock noises BACK when the peacock called during mating season. And we've been without rain for weeks... so no poopy mud. Lucky me. Diane ============================================================================ POST is Copyrighted 2007.
