Can't speak for people. But yawning in dogs is one of the
calming signals. Dogs under some sort of stress will often
yawn, lick their lips, look away (eye slides) or a
combination of any or all of these and other signals in
order to calm other dogs, themselves or even US, down. Try
it for yourself. Smile benignly at your dog while making
soft eye contact and blink a couple of times. Chances are
that your dog will return the signal. Now you're talking!!
