Vivian and I got our first German Shepherd from Kenneth Netherton,  a 
breeder and fancier in Kansas City and attended our first shows in  
Philadelphia, 
Baltimore, Boston, and Providence in the winter of  1950-51.  Did we see 
any of you there?  We were interested in seeing how our puppy compared with 
the show  dogs.  We were sure he was superior and we struggled  to understand 
what made one dog better than another.  (We still struggle with this)  We 
early learned that whites were a “no-no”.  It has been so ever since.  In 
the 
intervening 64 years we have attended many shows and have  only seen a few 
whites shown, and none place in the ribbons.   
In the February 1930 issue of “The Shepherd Dog” the publication  of the 
GSDCA, an article by Dr. J. W. Sherer appeared entitled “The Case Against  
the White Shepherd Dog”.  Dr. Sherer was a noted  fancier and owner of the 
1928 Grand Victrix.  In the first AKC dog book published in 1929 the standard 
of the  GSD stated that whites were not desirable.  There has been nothing in 
the standard since then that should have  encouraged the breeding and sale 
of whites.  Yet, the tyro Shepherd buyer probably does not even know of the  
existence of the standard as we did not in the beginning.  (Our puppy had 
good color but a straight rear)  And whites began to be advertised to the 
public as “rare”, thus  suggesting greater value than the 
Strongheart-Rin-Tin-Tin image appearing in  movies and TV.  They advertised 
their whites in Dog 
World as  “rare”.  This really pissed off the serious breeders of  whom we 
had many in the 1960s; they were trying to breed to the standard and  having 
trouble selling their pet quality pups because the public was falling for  
the “rare” scam.  The parent club tried to  remedy this by writing a 
standard in the late 1950s that disqualified any  predominantly white dog and 
this 
was approved by the membership but not the  AKC. 
Then the parent club tried to take action in the late  60s.  The president 
complained to Dog World that  they were perpetrating a fraud on the public 
by allowing whites to be advertised  as “rare” misleading the innocent 
uninformed member of the public.  Dog World’s response was that the whites 
were 
not “disqualified”  by the standard and promised that if whites were 
disqualified by the standard  they would head the classified section for 
Shepherds 
with the notification that  whites were disqualified.  This effort was led 
by  the pc president Bob Reuter and I had many conversations with him on this 
 subject   The standard was written to disqualify whites,  approved by the 
membership and Dog World lived up to its promise to put the  notice on the 
classified column. 
Now after 40 plus years there is a move to flush all this effort  by the 
club down the toilet.  One must wonder  why.  We know that whites are not 
going to  win.  One answer may well be to help sell pet  puppies.  So it will 
be 
easier the con the public into  buying those “rare” whites.  This will be 
a betrayal  to the breeders who over the last 80 plus years have tried to 
breed to the  standard and who have made sure that any whites that may have 
occurred in their  breedings never entered the future gene  pool.
