Have a stock set of questions when you get phone calls. Ask, like the
utilities companies do, "What is your phone number in case we get
disconnected?" If they don't give it, don't go one step further.
Then start asking THEM questions and until you get answers you can
confirm, don't give out any other information.
And for your last question, Yes, you are paranoid and SHOULD be, and
Yes, you should really start screening people who call you about dogs
or cats or horses or guinea pigs.
These people glean information from websites, class postings, show
catalogs when they get extremist enough.
