To put it more simply, I just say it is a breeders showcase. Gives folks an
opportunity to see what bitches and dogs are producing. Which pedigrees click
and what the result of breeding has brought about.
All in all, it shows the depth of quality being produced by the breeders in the
German Shepherd world. Conformation ring of course.

This is the reply to your question.

How many of you have been asked this question by newcomers to the dog show
world and how many of you have stumbled around not being able to answer in
such a way that the person who asked the question has gone away with a
clear-cut idea as to what a Futurity is? Perhaps this will help clarify it
a little and you can use it as an aid the next time you are asked this
  hard-to-answer question.
A Futurity is different from a regular show in that, though it is AKC
sanctioned, no championship points are awarded. It actually has the same
status as a sanctioned match with the AKC, but, of course, is more important
  within the Shepherd world.
Instead of Best of Breed, the winner is called Best in Futurity. Litters
must be nominated for Futurities whereas in regular competition they are
not. The competition in Futurities is in age groups, while in regular dog
shows this is not true except for the puppy classes.
Futurities first came into being in thoroughbred horse racing where unborn
foals are nominated for specific races. Our Futurities are a breeders'
show. The litters nominated are the result of each breeder's breeding
program or plan. Although a complete litter is seldom shown at the
Futurity, there are usually quite a few litters present with several
entries. This provides a chance to observe the overall quality of these
  litters.
The country is divided into nine regional sections for the purposes of the
Futurity shows. The regions were determined by the GSDC of America which
actually puts on these shows through regional host clubs. The Parent Club
establishes all rules and regulations concerning the Futurities and the
coordination work is done by a national Futurity chairman who works with
  each regional chairman.
Originally, these shows were a good indication of what breedings and
progress (or lack of it) were being made in each region. Now, however, with
the advent of jet travel even for dogs, it is commonplace to see winners in
each region who live thousands of miles from that particular region. Some
breeders who have what they feel are excellent litters do not want their
littermates to compete against each other and will enter puppies from one
litter in two or more Futurities. The ability to ship dogs for breeding and
showing has eliminated many of the regional difference in types of dogs
being produced. The gene pool has become less diverse.
No puppy can be entered in a Futurity unless his litter was nominated and
the breeder or co-breeder of the litter is a member of the GSDCA. The
nomination alone does not enter him in the Futurity, it merely makes him
eligible to be entered. An entry form must be submitted with a fee by
the closing date in March of the Futurity year. The owner of a dog entered
  in the
Futurity no longer needs to be a member of the GSDCA, but the owner of a dog
entered in the Maturity must be a member of the GSDCA.
Litters may be nominated within the first 90 days of whelping for a nominal
fee of $25.00. A late fee of $50 is incurred up to 120 days and a late fee
  of
$100 over 120 days from whelping. Classes at the Futurity are divided by
sex and age. There are 4 age classes: Seniors - whelped from October 1 to
December 31 (roughly 15 to 18 months at show time); Intermediate - whelped
from January 1 to March 31 (roughly 12 to 15 months at show time); Teenage -
whelped from April 1 to June 30 (roughly 9 to 12 months at show time); and
Junior - whelped July 1 to September 30 (roughly 6 to 9 months at show
time). Puppies are entered into these age classes regardless of how mature
they are for their age or personal preference of the exhibitor.
Each Futurity show has one judge who judges both dogs and bitches. At the
end of judging the dog classes, the four dog class winners will come back
into the ring and compete against each other for best dog. The same will
happen with the bitch classes. The judge will then determine between these
two winners which one will be Best in Futurity and Best of Opposite Sex in
Futurity. These two winners are then eligible to compete against the
winners of the other eight regions in the Futurity Sweepstakes at the
National Specialty show. In 2001 a reserve program was instituted at the
Futurities and now reserves are also sent to compete at the National Futurity
Sweepstakes. 18 of the top young dogs/bitches can compete in each class at
the
National Sweepstakes. The winner at the National Futurity Sweepstakes is
designated the Futurity Victor and Victrix as determined by sex, and their
pictures
appear on the cover of the Review. Three ROM points are also awarded to
their
  sire and dam.
Winners of the classes of each regional have their pictures in the Review
along with the placings in each class, thus giving all GSDCA members a
chance to view the winners from the various regions.
In addition to the Futurity classes, there is a Maturity section to the
Futurity show. The Maturity entries are judged after the Futurity section
and is for those dogs entered, but not necessarily shown, in the Futurity
the year before. They may be entered in any region - not just the region
they were entered in for the Futurity.
There are four Maturity classes: Junior Maturity Dogs or Bitches and
Senior Maturity Dogs or Bitches. Senior class entries are those which were
born between October 1 and March 31 (24-30 months at show time), and Junior
entries are born between April 1 and September 30 (18-24 months at show
time). Again, the winners of the two classes compete and the winners of
that become either Best in Maturity or Best of Opposite Sex in Maturity.
These two winners are eligible to compete against the winners of the other
regions at the National Maturity Sweepstakes for the title Maturity Victor
or Victrix. Reserves were also instituted in the Maturity system and may
also compete in the National Sweepstakes. Their sire and dam will receive 3
ROM
points and they will be featured on the cover of the Review.
The Futurities are our look into the future of our breed and should be an
all-important event in each region. They show what breeders are
accomplishing in their breeding programs, which stud dogs and brood bitches
are producing, as well as what is happening in and to our breed. Futurities
are an invaluable tool in formulating the future of the German Shepherd.
  Dog.
