Hi I also want to see them slow on a loose lead ..Than I tell them go at what
speed they want ..I place all and give my reasons I always have..Feel most want

Many interesting comments on the subject with Kathy T. spot on.
The purpose of the walk is to properly evaluate every gait of the animal.
Watch the action of the forehand -the hindquarter and the overall harmony in
each gait.
The slow easy trot-not the racing that we so often see- is the true herding
gait but as a judge I want to see all-the walk- the slow trot and a short
segment of the faster gait(and if need be the pace-gallop not included).
If the judge is knowledgeable it is an easy job to pick out the good ones
but a harder job to determine where the placements should be when there is
quality.
We award only 4 places but I feel it is important to put each animal in the
proper order from number 1 to the last entry and be able to explain why.
My opinion is that the walk plays an important part of the evaluation and
should be used by all judges.
