Injured dog heals; foster owner looks for owner

Duke, the injured German shepherd who captured the hearts of local
residents, is recuperating from a dislocated elbow in Fairfield foster
care.
His foster owner now wants to find the dog's owner.

The injured 3-year-old male pooch was plucked off the side of Interstate
780 near Glen Cove on June 11, by an animal control officer.

From there he spent a couple nights at the Solano County Animal Shelter
in Fairfield. A shelter volunteer, with a soft spot for German
shepherds, spotted him and decided to work the phones to get him medical
help.

On Wednesday, Ed Campbell took Duke into a Fairfield veterinarian's
office to get X-rayed. Turns out, the dog only had a dislocated elbow,
which was popped back into place without surgery. Total bill $439. All
the expenses were covered by Solano County Animal Rescue Foundation,
Campbell said.

"He's a really sweet dog," Campbell said. "He's a gentle dog. Gentle
mouth."

From there, Campbell decided to foster him. The one obstacle was Lady,
his 9-year-old "spoiled" German shepherd that wouldn't take well to
having a fellow dog added to her home life.

Campbell quickly named the dog Duke.

"It falls trippingly off the tongue," Campbell said in a phone
interview, as Duke barked in the background.

"If we can find the owner, they can have him today," he said. "If the
owner doesn't show up, he'll be adopted out ` but because he's a rescue
dog, he would have to get neutered."

That procedure would cost another $160, he said.

Since the Times-Herald's article on Monday about Duke's plight, dozens
of people phoned and e-mailed the paper asking how they could help,
including a canine police officer, veterinarian's office and concerned
animal lovers.

"That's awesome. That's really cool," said Chari Goldstein, the Benicia
resident who came across Duke as she returned home from work June 11.

On a side note, Campbell suspects that Duke was never hit by a car, but
instead jumped out of a pick-up or other moving vehicle.
