First of all I would like to thank each one of you who took the time to
answer my question regarding vacuums. 
This is what makes this list so great, you have a question and answers come
instantly, and they are great, too.

To make it easy for the next person who might have the same predicament I
will post what the general consensus is:

Dysons and Orecks seem to be the top vacuums in regard to pick up,
especially dog hair

Shark Navigator is liked by quite a few

Hoover Pet Vac has good dog hair pick up 

Kirby is the least liked and some say bluntly they don't like them.

I have not had any feedback regarding the upright versus the canister. Most
like the bagless but there is a preference for bags in one case.

There was also mention of used vacuums, Oreck especially who seem to have
some fairly new ones at a good price.

This was really an experience and I want to thank you all for your input.
