County continues dog roundup

Pittsylvania County animal control officers issued 84 summons in the  
first three weeks of a roundup of unlicensed dogs.

According to Assistant County Administrator Otis Hawker, officers have  
checked nearly 600 dogs for licenses since the roundup began on Aug. 2.

They wrote 46 citations for unlicensed dogs and 38 for unvaccinated  
dogs, he said.

The first roundup in a 300-square-mile area northwest of Chatham and  
west of Gretna to the Franklin County line ended Sunday.

A second roundup began Monday and will continue through Sept. 12 in  
the Dan River area, which includes Ringgold, Blairs, Kentuck, Keeling,  
Laurel Grove and Sutherlin.

A third section of the county - southwest of Chatham including Mount  
Hermon and Brosville - will be targeted Sept. 13-Oct. 3.

The final roundup Oct. 4-24 will take place east of Gretna to Campbell  
and Halifax counties.

A color-coded map of the roundups was advertised in the newspaper.

In addition to issuing summons, animal control officers picked up 15  
stray dogs and collected 25 dogs surrendered voluntarily by owners.

Hawker said the animal shelter adopted out four strays and transferred  
10 dogs to other state-licensed agencies.

By law, the county has to hold dogs without a collar or tag five days.
