I remember the very first case of Heartworm in the State of California.
( I'm OLD ya know... <G> ) YEARS ago, a
young man from the South came to our area in Northern California with a
GSD female... that he discovered was infected
with heartworm about eight months after he arrived. So she was around
for 8 months before anyone knew.....including
her owner.
After that....we heard of a couple of cases....but no one really paid
attention.....after-all....everyone considered it to be
a problem in THE SOUTH. <G> Within ten years we started seeing lots
of cases of heartworm. NOW this area is a
hotbed for heartworm......and also now Lymes disease and Erlichiosis...and
other tick ailments. Many people in our
area have been found to suffer from Lymes........
( we are the "garden" State for these ailments I guess. They seem to
thrive here )
Same with the State of Nevada. When we placed a puppy in homes in
Nevada....we have always included in the puppy
kit information about Heartworm preventative and clarify that it should be
part of the Health regime. Puppies have already
had their first treatment for heartworm before they leave here....all
included in the Health Records. But the new owners always
ran into the problem of their Veterinarians telling them heartworm was
not a problem in Nevada and preventative was not
necessary and not available. We had to struggle to get the owners to get
their Vet to sell them preventative care.
NOW Nevada is listed on the Heartworm Maps.....as having
Heartworm........
*( People seem to forget that this is a TRAVELING Society!! )* None of
us stay in just one spot with our pets....we
move around, we travel, vacation, go to shows.....<G> Maybe heartworm
is not a problem in your area now....
But how do you know your neighbor did not move in from an area ( like
California now ) that HAS Heartworm...and their
horse, or dog, or cow or cat is not a carrier?? ) Heartworm does not
kill other animals like it does our dogs.... so often
the owners do not know they are infected.
Problem here in N. California is that we have ALL KINDS of wildlife
...from deer to, bears, mountain lions, raccoons, Foxes, etc.
and all they need is one bite from one mosquito in the Spring to become
infected. One incoming mosquito that is a carrier
for heartworm can cause it to grow amazingly fast....as that animal that
was bitten becomes a carrier..and thus the mosquito
that bite it and go on to the next victim...........well.....you get the
picture....
Sorry everyone....didn't mean to get on a soapbox..... just wanted a
simple answer to the Ivomec 1 % question for someone else.

I was just reading that Oregon no longer tracks cases of Heartworm altho
it is there in the Southern part of the state. Interesting. Glad it isn't
that common because I have never used preventive meds for it.
