I’ve mentioned before but all my brothers and my sister (and I) were in one
branch of the military or the other, many at the same time. My sister served
as an Army nurse in MASH units in Korea, and the Navy, Coast Guard, Army and
Marines all had one or two of us in there. Then my daughter, son, 2 SsIL
were in the AF. AND an awesome nephew recently retired (Colonel), after
serving as an Army nurse in all the ‘hot’ zones that we have been involved in
his 25 years of service… Some of us were enlisted, some were officers, but
’they’ all served and did it well.
OH! Hey, I got that Good Conduct medal, too… probably one of the least
deserved of all the above!!!!!!!!

I have often talked about my aunt who performed as a magician at 104. But,
today I remember my uncle Don, her kid brother.
Don served as a machine gunner on Okinawa. He was awarded the Presidential
Citation Navy and Marine Corps, WWII Medal of Valor, American defense
Service award, Combat Action Citation, Good Conduct Medal, (probably the
only member of my family that deserved that), The Navy Occupied Service
Medal and the American Campaign Medal.
I remember so well when he returned from the war. Don stood 6' 3" and was
the best of our family. I remember him as my friend, my uncle and the
person who everyone turned to when the family had a problem.
Today more than most, I remember him and his service to our country.
