I was listening to the Gardening Guy (You Bet your Garden) over the weekend and 
he had a 
marvelous solution to killing deer ticks which are carried by field mice into 
your yards

Take a toilet paper roll, cut into thirds (or cut PVC pipe) and take 2 cotton 
balls and saturate 
them with Pyrethins and place them into the tubes

Mice will carry off the cotton balls to make a nest

Dead deer ticks result
