All the discussion about dogs being gunshy reminds me of a time when I
was showing my last Pointer -- while we were in the ring for specials,
there was an explosion on the showgrounds (the stove in someone's
motorhome blew up, we found out later). Every dog in the class was
startled, and each one tucked his or her tail and looked in the
direction of the motorhomes......... probably less than a minute
later, all but one animal had recovered..tail were up and swishing as a
Pointer's tail should.... the single dog who did NOT recover was given
Best of Breed...probably because she was the only one with a "name"
handler on her.
We went Best Opposite, and I asked the judge why she hadn't penalized
the bitch she put up for not recovering from the noise...her reply was
"they don't have to be steady to cannon." I could have argued the
point...if every other dog and bitch in the ring recovered, the one who
didn't should have been penalized (not to mention that she also had
lousy ligamentation....you never did know where her feet were going to
land)........ nevertheless, this is a judge the AKC calls upon to
instruct others............ boo hiss.................
