Sorry Penny... YES that genetic combo is possible...
so don't take any sleeping pills!
;)
JP&P
PS for those interested in the genetic mix:
the black is D-(D or d), a-a, E-(E or e)
The blue is d-d, a-a, E-(E or e)
The black/tan (point or saddle) is D-(D or d), a^t-(a^t or a), E-(E or e)
And the white, D-(D or d), a locus doesn't matter so could be anything, e-e
D= black pigment
d= dilute pigment
a^t= tan point (saddle is a modifier gene)
a= recessive black
E= color expression
e= clear of color (yellow, red, white; depending on breed)
Each parent would have to have one "d", one "a", and one "e" gene; and sire
would have to be a^t (tan point/saddle)( because he would carry for
recessive black, as would the sable) with one parent having to have an "E"
gene (and most GSDs have the E^m modifier where they have the face mask)--
a sable bitch has that covered.
Sorry!

I had a bad dream last night. While Billy and I were out somewhere
galavanting, a sable bitch of ours whelped 4 puppies: a black, a blue, a
white and a black & tan. (I know theoretically speaking this isn't
possible, but hey, it was a DREAM.) They were all males and all coats.
(Those who know me well know I like bitches and don't care for coats.)
Well, the black puppy didn't make it as he was measly. The blue was
gorgeous, as was the white one. The black & tan had a head like a Rottie.
UGH. Then I woke up. Whew. What a horror.
