I like that idea about the data base. I know what is going on is genetic
because Margo's 8.5 year old son looks 2 maybe 3 years old. Runs 5 miles every
day. I ofa'ed him at 8 and the vet said his hips looked vey good and the OFA
gave him a Good rating with normal elbows. DM test came back N/N. I do puppy
shots one booster and that is it. I will do rabies if they need it only because
I live off the grid and the dogs are exposed to wild animals here. I feed
normal food but do switch from time to time. the only one I have to be careful
with is Victor the 8 year old because is reacts to Salmon based food. What
amazes me is that Margo is still mentally active has all of her teeth and good
muscle tone for a girl her age. Eyes are clear and her hearing is still pretty
good. The one thing all of the dogs here have in common is high drive and a
desire to work. Margo will still come to a heal when asked.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could find some genetic marker for longevity!!
Congrats on your oldsters! To me that is the true test of a thoughtful breeding
program!

daughter out of an Illuminator daughter, so.....like the others, all American
lines. All black/tan, black/red, too:) Great temperament, just plain good
dogs, albeit a little prettier than
the ones I grew up with.I hear
so many stories about people who have horrible luck with gut issues, cancer,
early deaths or dogs that just age too quickly....Lackland wants their dogs to
work until they're 12....maybe we should come up with a questionnaire regarding
feeding and vaccination practices, lifestyle choices, a pedigree
analysis....and try to figure out what works and what doesn't. Of course, it
would require people to be open and honest about their dogs, and to keep egos
and personalities out of it. I know our Parent Club has a Health and Genetics
committee going; maybe one of the more scientifically inclined on this list
could start putting together the questionnaire? We submitted DNA samples on
about 15 of our dogs for the database, and I'd be happy to provide whatever
other information needed over the last 20 years of our dogs...maybe we could
all end up with dogs that are still in good shape at 15.
