As many of you know, we have been in the hectic business of relocating animals within the US and around the globe for more than 10 years now. About 5 years ago we could see the "handwriting" on the wall and at that time suggested rotating the National using Major Cities as a basis for selection. Some of these major cities would require 3 hour drives to reach the actual "show site' BUT at least exhibitors could GET THERE. One example is the former Olympic Equestrian site outside of Atlanta which is located 35 minutes from the huge International airport AND is surround by large grassy fields and many, many hotels and motels reasonably priced. This site was considered for the World Trials but was rejected because the main large Horse arena was not covered. Once we sent an anteater to the zoo in Paris, that was quite an experience as was the Horse that went to South Africa - We send Great Danes, Irish Wolfhounds, & Mastiffs in custom made crates (much larger than a 700) out of Atlanta frequently. Destinations are: LAX, SFO, NY,( 2 airports) NJ, Miami, Chicago, Washington DC, Houston, Seattle, Orlando, sometimes Philadelphia although not offered every day of the week same with Dallas & New Orleans. Could be others that don't come to mind right now. The President really messed us up yesterday, he came to Atlanta to meet with CDC regarding the epidemic in Africa. All flights were put on hold as he came in and we had 5 dogs going out to German,Italy, Russian and Poland respectively and they all missed their flights!!!!! What a headache!! Now, pick back up from airport, board overnight, pickup again and take to airport, make sure the documents are still valid for delayed arrival date as connecting flight in AMS couldn't take one of the dogs until the following day as the wide bodied plane connected only EVERY OTHER DAY, NOT EVERY DAY. My hair is getting greyer by the day, my patience is about gone and we cannot attend the National due to granddaughter's wedding that same weekend which had to take place because her future husband is Lt in the Air Force and has received orders to report to base at a specific time. I love happy weddings but in this instance I would have settled for an elopement! Actually we just hope he does not get sent to the mess in the Middle East as the aircraft he flies is used for ground support. Sure am glad the ever ready Bob Lindsey will be taping so we can see our bitch that is being shown. Ah life can certainly be a challenge. We still breed, whelp, raise, train, condition bathe, groom, transport and double our own dogs. We all GREATLY appreciate how hard the Board and those in the surrounding area work at any given National and realize it would not happen without them. Also, we all love great seating, great sod, great lighting, great weather...and nice big arenas and nice herding facilities and co-operative sheep. But the fact is.... UNLESS we can get our DOGS THERE..it all means nothing...and in time will be nothing! At the end of the day..It IS A DOG SHOW! Flying is rapidly becoming an impossibility with dogs...and that has to now be taken into serious consideration for EVERY site. Carolyn marhaven@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx www.marhaven.com -----Original Message----- From:On Behalf Of Gail Rutter Subject: St. Louis National If people knew about the problem, in advance, with the airport not taking 500 crates, why didn't they plan accordingly? I know there would be a handful of people it would still affect, but the majority could have sent their dogs with handlers to drive in. I believe the BOD had the memberships best interest in mind when they planned the national at Purina Farms. The facilities are uncomparable and F R E E. the cost of the nationals is the largest expense our club has, so money has to be a huge consideration when making plans for the nationals. IMO. And don't think living closer to the national is a picnic. Those who live closer put in a lot of effort and time to make the national successful and that's a burden for some. Thank goodness the club "workers" live closer to the national site because they spend more time getting our marvelous, awesome national to happen each year. My grateful thanks go to those people who are so dedicated. So everyone must make a cheerful effort to create a wonderful national, no matter what part of the country it's held in. Again, IMO.
