Has anyone one these list READ the American Veterinary Medical Association's
guidelines
on euthanasia???? It reads like a page out of your WORST horror novels! They
also find it "acceptable" to throw live baby chicks into a GRINDER for
disposal! All that they require is that the blades be kept free from dead
chicks as to avoid undue suffering of the rest of the chicks being killed. The
AVMA does NOT ban the use of IC or IP euthanization...they simply state that IC
should be used as a last resort and that the animal should be sedated.
Go to the case against Dr. Baber of Tenn. who was found guilty of killing dogs
and cats by IC methods WITHOUT sedation and is STILL PRACTICING!! Dr. Baber
was required to take a course in humane euth' methods...I am QUITE certain he
KNEW how to humanely kill the animals; at the 9$ per animal that he was paid by
the state, it would have impinged on his income to take the time to sedate them
prior to killing them.
The AVMA has it within its power to ELIMINATE the gas chambers and other brutal
means of destroying healthy, companion animals by declaring this method
inhumane, yet they refuse to do so....and they worry about ear cropping that is
done with ANESTHESIA? I do feel that tail docking or the removal of dewclaws
should ALSO be done under a local anesthetic; I am not a proponent of the
elastic band method to remove tails.. That being said, the AVMA is wasting its
potential clout on things that are NOT causing the horrendous, mass suffering
that so many dogs and cats endure each day in shelters around this country. The
general public is unaware of the apathy that is rampant in the organizations
that are charged to care for these who are the most vulnerable.....

recent announcement that it condemns cropping the ears
 and docking the
tails of dogs as breed standards, PETA has sent an 
urgent letter to
American Kennel Club (AKC) President and CEO Dennis
 Sprung urging him to
ban these painful mutilations. PETA is also 
calling on the AKC to alter
breed standards in order to discourage 
breeding dogs for traits that
cause debilitating health problems
(such as long ears which are prone to
infection) and genetic defects
 that can result in painful skin
conditions, bone problems, and heart 
failure, among many other problems.


In its letter, PETA points out that the AKC's British
counterpart,
 The Kennel Club, is currently examining and revising
standards forâ
۬209 breeds and has already changed the breed standard for Pekingese

dogs, whose flat faces often cause breathing problems and make the

animals prone to over heating.

 "Breed standards that
encourage dogs' ears and tails to be chopped 
off have already caused
enough suffering," says PETA Vice President
 Daphna Nachminovitch.
"When breeders attempt to create exact
 replicas within breeds, they
help perpetuate inherited diseases that
 doom dogs to a lifetime of
suffering and their guardians to an
 avalanche of vet bills.
"
