I'm not Greg, but I will take a shot at answering your question.    
Entries are down pretty much across the board because  the economy is  
bad...and :
   GSDs are the ONE breed where owner handlers are as scarce as hens'  
teeth, as a rule.  So, in addition to having to pay entry fees, travel  
costs, etc., GSD fanciers must add handling fees to the cost of showing.
Sure other breeds use handlers, too...but, as i said, not to the  
extent that our breed does.

Then, you can figure on the poor quality of judging --that includes  
judges who haven't a clue as well as those
who feel obligated to do favors..........

No, it isn't the handlers' fault that entries are down.  The whole  
picture of dog shows is rather unsavory
these days.  I don't blame people for not entering more.
