Being altruistic is its own reward, and what others think doesn't matter.
After I posted this, I did wonder if all of Ed's wives were altruistic.
What self interest could they have had.
I think a number of people in dogs work through this, and take an altruistic
attitude towards their dogs. Many do it for self interest, but not all.
