On his last day in office, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie signed a bill into
law removing police powers from the NJSPCA and giving responsibility for animal
cruelty investigations to county prosecutors.
The NJSPCA is a private nonprofit company that has been empowered to enforce
New Jersey’s animal control laws for 150 years. A television news investigative
reporter exposed numerous issues, including many animal cruelty cases that
appeared to be left un-investigated. One of the major concerns was the lack of
accountability to citizens with reporting of investigations, response times and
outcomes. With the 2016 move by the FBI to record incidents of animal cruelty,
a municipal response will result in more accurate data collection.
"A new day arrives for abused and abandoned animals in New Jersey, as law
enforcement will do what law enforcement knows best: enforce the laws. And
county SPCAs will be free to do what they do best: provide for and care for
abused and abandoned animals" Sen. Raymond Lesniak (D-Elizabeth).
