Back in the late '80s I was attending the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) annual convention in Washington DC. Lee Grenwood had just finished singing his wonderful song "God Bless the USA" and as the lights came up I wsa but one of many senior soldiers in uniform trying hard not to let the tears show. A civilian gentelman walked up to me, stuck out his hand and said "I just wanted to thank you for all you do." In my entire military career no one had ever said that to me before and it is something I will never forget.
