Boy this is a big topic! 
First and Foremost:  This is a free country. Period.  There may be problems 
with it, but I'll take it any time over some sort of dictatorship and that 
includes a surplus of unwanted dogs. 
Nonetheless,  less look at this logically: 

1)  Pet puppies are not surplus.  There are many people out there who's 
reason for getting up in the morning is thier pet dog.  To sneer at this is 
certainly heartless. 

2). It has been proven time and time again,  puppies neutered early are at a 
much higher risk for cancer than those who wait until later.  In fact, a 
recent study I read reported those dogs neutered before age 4 had a 25 percent 
higher incidence of cancer.  To someone who has a much beloved pet that risk 
may be unaceptable ,  especially if they have had a loved die from cancer. 
 In addition, every assistance dog group has found that puppies neutered young 
never mature mentally.  If you want a focused dog you must wait until they are 
close to 2 years.  What about the average pet owner who is sick and tired of 
his obnoxious  "puppy"  that has never grown up and has never really 
developed adult behaviour ?  What about all his hopes and dreams, not to 
mention Money he's spent for an early neuter job that has serious contributed 
to his now need to turn the dog into a shelter because he can't deal with it 
any longer? 

3).  Every show breeder started somewhere.  Maybe the dog could have been 
better, but they learned as they went. 

4). Sadly, not every dog deserves to live. I'm sorry, but a dog that is 
agressive toward people and other pets should not live. A dog that was never 
socialized and is now nasty with people, especially children does not deserve 
to live.  No child ever deserves a bite. Ever! 
Dogs that cannot be housebroken should be euthanized. No one can live with that 
and the dogs often ended up beaten and kicked.  Dogs that have a physical 
unsoundness should be euthanized.  I say that with full knowledge of people 
who have gone to the extreme to save a dog.   Thier hearts are breaking and 
its not fair to do that to them. 

5)  AND THE BIGGEST LIE OF ALL TIME?  Is these animal rightest who yell about 
pet over population, when they do nothing to help with low cost spay and neuter 
clinics.  Its about $800. for average spay for a German Shepherd.  If you 
really want to put your money where your mouth is,  work towards a low cost 
clinic. 

   Yes it a tough job and I appreciate those that do rescue. I have done some 
and I know first hand.  We must continue to educate the public,  We must have 
fair laws concerning the breeding and keeping of dogs, and we must always keep 
things in perspective, because nothing alienates someone more than a zealot.
