This is an interesting subject for me, since I ship paintings, and have been doing so for 30 years, without a single bit of damage. I get a box either from Mailboxes, etc. or one of the u-haul type outfits. I get one inch thick foam board which is rigid and strong. this gets cut to the same size as the painting, (which is framed, or wrapped in cloth) and goes on either side, in the shipping box.. Nothing can hurt a painting packed this way. It is lightweight, rigid, and one inch thick on both sides. The box costs approx $5.-10, the foam board is like $7.00...total packing cost under $25.00, depending on the size of the painting and the weight of the frame.. Since it is so light weight, it is very inexpensive to ship, and practically bomb- proof. They handle things so roughly these days that it must be packed very carefully in a wood crate rather than cardboard.
