Interesting how most of what you hear about this beautiful race horse is
that it comes from a "California background"...first time breeders and an
old trainer that has a small operation. Amazing to me how the Press, or the
other Competitors are judging this winner...by the size of the stable of the
owners or trainer. If it isn't from a "big time" breeding farm...it must not
really count much. They even talk about the price of the sire & Dam...and
not much about the quality of the horse itself. That should change now.
<G>
I often think we have the same "disease" in our Sport. Every year before the
National many want to pick the next Grand Victor...and almost always the names
out first are from big breeders with big kennel operations or dogs with
handlers
with big kennel operations and a lot of promotion beforehand.
I LOVE IT when we get a judge that can see through all that and actually looks
for the best dog! Gives hope to some of us who only have about 4 - 6 dogs by
our own choice.
I loved it yesterday when this great horse that was "humbly" bred..( by owners
who knew what they wanted ) with an older trainer that didn't keep a 100
horses
(by choice ) and that was spotted early-on by the Jockey...EASILY won the Derby.
Some of the greatest come from the smallest most humble backgrounds.

Funny about the pedigree. According to our local paper( was an AP story not
written locally), the winner was "humbly" bred with no outstanding producers to
speak of. The mare cost the owners 8,000.00 the stallion was a 2500.00 horse.
With that said, yesterday I looked at the pedigrees of some of the contenders,
funny I remember one or two going back to a stallion named "Pulpit" and Lucky
Pulpit. Pulpit I believe was the sire of the winner. Many of the horses go back
to Northern Dancer, Mr. Prospector and an Irish horse named Caro. So I am not
certain where the press came up with the notion that the horse's pedigree
lacked quality, but like much of the press, they don't care about the facts,
and they don't know the subject matter. Nice looking horse, happy the favorite
lived up to the expectations! Christine

I love the quote below by 77 year old Art Sherman, (trainer of California
Crome) who has the distinction of being the oldest trainer ever to have a Derby
winner.
"Everybody who's had to struggle once in a while or had something bad happen in
their life, they appreciate him more than those people who have pockets so deep
they have no problem throwing money away."
Oh how true that is, and how much sweeter the prize. Being a person who loves,
bred and has shown GSDs, it hits the nail on the head. I remember the quote of
a well known judge, "Anyone with enough money can buy a Grand Victor or
Victrix, the challenge is to be able to breed one." Therein lies part of the
problem in our breed, it's becoming a rich person's sport again. Pat
