There is still something special about a small town 4th of July, especially when you grew up in a mega-metropolis like Los Angeles. I've just been placed into a time machine and made a part of a Norman Rockwell painting. Blaine Washington has two signals and a population of 2500, yet they come from miles for the Main Street parade which is 2 houses away from my balcony. The 6 block long parade lasts an hour and features soldiers, local schools, fire trucks, tractors, politicians, churches, and nearby businesses, plus lots of candy for the kids. It was a small town parade without big frills and glamour but lots of people with real feelings of celebration for this Country's birthday. I knew I was part of a scene that was being played out across the Nation in unknown places everywhere, and what great memory to add to the list.
