[ SHOWGSD-L ] National specialties issues - my humble opinion

I'm going to respond to this, as I've been following this "thread" of
discussion with some interest and surprise, as well as dismay.
I realize that in the past 10 or so years, national specialties have
increasingly become somewhat fancy, society type events, and in my opinion that
has
hurt the specialties globally. With my breed, MUCH smaller in numbers than
GSDs, our nationals have gone from one day events to FIVE day events. There is
all sorts of hoopla and fussy stuff interspersed in with the actual dog show.
I, for one, long for the days of the more simple specialties. I don't need to
stay in a 5 star hotel for a week in order to get to go once a year to see
what other breeders have going on, and let them see my kids. I want to go for
DOGGY stuff, the "social stuff" comes naturally with the doggy stuff, as we all
exersive our dogs, go out to lunch together, play and just sit and "talk dogs"
all night long.

If I had to pay money to just sit at ringside, I would NOT go to a specialty.
It seems that the purpose of these shows is getting lost in the "human
factor". These nationals are supposed to be a showcase of everyone's best
endeavours, so that we can work together to improve the breed.

Anyway, I've got a lot more thoughts on this, and I'm ducking for cover now,
as I'm a total "nobody" in GSD's, but I am a long time dog breeder and
exhibitor, my dogs do quite well in the show ring, and I have more than paid my
doggy
due-dues!

I think that it would help a lot to have these Nationals held at a place
that can include all venues AND are accessible to the largest amount
of exhibitors. IMO "coastal" is about as bad as we can get.
