The SV allows breeding to NZ dogs because the dog MAY have other outstanding
qualities that are as important as a good hip rating.... As I have said
before... I have known many dogs who were classified by OFA as borderline or
worse that NEVER had an unsound day in their long lives.... I have also seen
dogs
that were OFA "good" and "excellent" that had crippling arthritis at 8 years
old.
Many of their (European) and OUR top breeders have bred dogs with a less
than perfect hip rating (in our case borderline) because they had/have other
qualities that were also VERY important to the breed. We get so hung up on one
aspect, many times, that we forget about the overall picture. Hips are
important... and so are elbows (in my opinion more important at THIS time), but
there is also structure (proven by movement), and
temperament/character/attitude
(the most important IMHO).
Some breeders stress temperament to such an extent that they are happy to
breed a dog with faulty structure (here read movement since structure is
proven
by movement) and less than stellar hips/elbows just to get the temperament.
The same can be said of any of the other qualities we have named.
I have also known breeders who would never breed their own bitch who wasn't
OFA'd..... they would, however, breed to a dog who had never been x-rayed. I
want to know what I am dealing with (on any quality) but I will try not to
get locked in on any one quality to the determent of the other qualities I am
trying to maintain or acquire.
