More info on yesteryears dogs & Mrs. Geraldine Dodge. __on how  she traveled 
with her dogs. The Alaska girls are writing an essay on  her------------
 
 
 
Well they didn't have station wagons or vans back  then,so Mrs. Dodge 
purchased  the biggest hearse  limousine she could find, converted it to a 
custom 
made vehicle ,with 5-6  doors on each side. Remember,we didn't have crates much 
back then. Even I  had to have my first crate handmade. Germany was way ahead 
of us that way. Each  dog had a bench(like the back seats  in our vans) with a 
snap to attach the  lead to. You could get the dog out of either side. She had 
her kennel man drive  her with the dogs to the show. He did the grooming and 
also handled the  dogs,although some times she hired different handlers as 
well. It was quite a  performance ,and impressive to see them arrive and get 
ready to show.
    Even I went to shows without crates. We take them so  much for granted 
now for the safety of the dogs. But we didn't have that many  freeways back 
then.. Most of the driving was on 2 lane roads,through every  little town. I 
can 
remember going to a show  with Virginia McCoy. I had a  station wagon.( one of 
the first) She sat in the front seat holding onto my  bitch,( who was in 
season) Ch. Kola von Beckhold (Pfeffer von Bern  daughter) and I had 3 males in 
back ,with their leashes snapped to different  corners,and hanging their heads 
out the windows. We went a lot slower down those  2 lane roads.It took 12 hrs 
to 
drive to Chicago,now it takes only 6  Helen  Miller Fisher
