  “Mooie”
By
Barbara J. Galasso

I don’t know who gave you the name “Mooie” or even what the name means.
But “Mooie” to me now means precious angel. After all, you were only 4
months old. What’s that equal to in days…….120 if you count a month as
having just 30? So you lived among man for 120 days, dear “Mooie”. You
were safer for the nine weeks that your mother carried you. It would
have been better that you would have been a stillborn, than born at all.
But born you were in the cold of winter, perhaps in a dark dampened
cellar on a cemented floor. I wonder how you survived those first few
months with so little warmth. It would have been kinder had you been
taken then.

You were born to a mother, but owned by a monster. The monster wasn’t of
the animal kind. The monster was known as man, the one who has bestowed
on him the highest of intelligence. Was the monster born this way, or
was he made this way? Regardless of how he came to exist among his more
civilized man, you little “Mooie” were going to find out what it meant
to be owned by a tortured, twisted soul known as evil. Your only sin is
that you were born at all.

Like all puppies, you were a happy, little inquisitive gal, curious
about the world around you. You couldn’t wait until you got up on your
feet to run and investigate and get into mischief. There was a whole
world out there to see. Oh boy, you could hardly wait to run and play in
that white stuff called snow. You were so clumsy and small; you had to
leap through it. Rolling down the hill in the backyard would give your
little body the exercise it would need to grow big and strong. Running
after momma and pulling on her tail was so much fun because she let you
get away with it. Yes, life was fun for a puppy your age. No worries, or
cares at all in the world. Anticipation for your next adventure filled
your dreams as your little body twitched as you lay sleeping on the
floor each night.

If you only lived for 120 days, at what age did the monster first burn
over 80% of your body? When was it that he threw the acid on your yet
undeveloped baby bones? Who heard your screams of agony? Did your mother
want to rescue you or did she run and hide behind the tree scared that
she would be next? What made the monster do this to you? Did you run up
to him pulling on his pant leg as all puppies your age do looking for
him to play with you? Did you try to give him kisses with that notorious
baby breathe puppies have? Maybe it was when you were hungry and was
looking for your meal? Or who knows, maybe you needed to be let outside
to go potty and instead you stained his carpet. Were you punished for
doing normal puppy things?

The pain was so intense, you poor little creature, that you tried to
lick your burning flesh to relieve the burn of the acid and in doing so,
you burnt your tongue and throat as well. Sleep eluded you; rest is
something you were unfamiliar with. Comfort and joy was never to be
yours. Because your cries must have been so loud and pitiful, you were
dumped like thrown out garbage in a backyard where children played when
a neighbor gently picked you up and brought you to the vets.

By the time the doctor and his assistants had you in their office, they
didn’t dare handle you for in doing so, your raw flesh cried out in
protest. Your body was as deep red as the blood that pumped to and from
your racing heart. Your face, mouth and paws were so severely scared and
the vet felt that your intestines were destroyed by the ingestion of the
acid. He said that you needed all your skin transplanted, but there was
nothing left to save. The burns were so powerful that the vet’s
assistants had trouble breathing or touching you for it burnt their own
skin to do so. He said it was the worst case of animal cruelty he had
ever seen. The only kindness you were to ever receive from man was when
the good doctor put a needle in your vein and released you from this
place called hell so you could enter a gentle kinder place called heaven
where angels take care of all babies.

Why were you born “Mooie?” What lesson was to be learnt from this? I’m
told you’re quite famous now “Mooie.” Quite a feat for a four month old
puppy, don’t you think? People have read of your story and your untimely
fate and their outraged cries and protests are heard in many different
parts of the world. There’s even a web-site telling about your short
horrific life.

Did the monster believe he was doing a service to mankind? After all
some of your kind is banned from some states now and more and more of
your breed is being put to sleep anyway. Did he think he’d do us a favor
by getting rid of you early in life? Let’s face it you were born a pit
bull and aren’t all pit bulls killers? Nice of the monster to think of
the rest of us! We don’t know who did this to you, but we’d sure like to
meet him………..and thank him????

The authorities said that anyone who would do this to a puppy probably
wouldn’t hesitate to do this to a human being. But all was not lost dear
“Mooie”. Oh no, not at all. For although you gave your precious life, it
is because that you lived at all that attention has now been brought to
those others who suffer like you did and for those good men of this
earth to prevent it from happening again.

When the monster looked at you withering in pain, he caught a glimpse of
what his eternal hell will be like. That’s why he had to dump and
abandon you because hell was knocking on his door. Did he make this
decision as your sorrow filled dark brown eyes locked on his pleading to
be released from your agony? He thought by getting rid of the evidence
that the authorities would never know. But someone else saw it all. And
in this case, the punishment will fit the crime. Someone bigger than man
promises it!
