I've had only one shepherd with mouth issues. My shepherd girl ended up with
periodontal disease about age ten. I truly feel that most issues are
hereditary. For my girl there was another, great-granddame in her pedigree
with a mouth issue. I did everything to save my shepherds life. She ended up
having all most all of her top teeth pulled by age thirteen. I hated to see
her go under so many times. Bottom teeth were always okay. Having those
teeth pulled changed her personality into a more submissive behavior. I
understood. My vets told me that periodontal would eventually take her life
in the near future. They gave her approximately seven months to live. With
my care, proper diet I kept her going STRONG until some months over
fourteen. I worked diligently at this every day I had her in my life. She
meant the world to me since the day she was born. My clinic put my girl down
in their records has a miracle with periodontal. They couldn't believe I
kept her going all of that time. Of course with their help. But then, she
was a miracle in a lot of things she did in her lifetime. [sigh]

My vet told me, "Never give your dog anything to chew on that you can't hit
your knee with!" Our shepherds are not the wolves they use to be. To many
fractured teeth from real bones, etc. Every other week I scale my dogs
teeth, brush every day with enzyme tooth paste, C.E.T. mouth wash & chews
with enzyme's. I pray I never have to deal with periodontal again.

Hi would like to know what everyone uses to keep their dogs teeth in tip top
shape. My poor girl had her teeth cleaned and two pulled yesterday. Good
thing shes already finished. Lol. She is not a happy camper today. In the
past I have given beef marrow bones, brushed them, used an enzyme spray,
and have had them cleaned in the past. Nothing works. I feel genetics plays
a big role in this as her mother also had trouble with her teeth. My Vet
blames some of it on the fact that they are big mouth breathers.Besides the
fact that I hate putting them under the cost is tremendous.Any suggestions
would be appreciated.
