Hi, I have been in it for 30 years, just a few less than you. What I heard from the pet people who called for a puppy 30 years ago was: "My GSD just died of old age." What I hear now is: "my GSD, who was 1 (2,3,4) just died of bloat, torsion, toxic gut, DM ". I think the Veterans Class at the National is larger because more breeders know that John Q. Public would like to see our old guys--I know I do. My favorite class at The National is the Parade of Greats, because I know they have made it and haven't succumbed to some of the genetic problems in our breed. I am not tricked by what I hear. I know that during the last 10 years I have bought pups and young adults from reputable and some not so reputable breeders. From these I have one whose ear didn't stand, various animals with hip and elbow problems, heart murmurs that DID NOT go away, Toxic Gut, pancreas problems, infertility in a 2 year old male--AND SO ON. I know I am forgetting something. What did I do? I placed all those animals with loving families--and for the most part got replacements. I must be a hard head not to have quit--I felt like it many times. Breeding is a scary thing. And from MY personal experience health issues are worse than they were 30 years ago. Having been in it 35 years or so, I can tell you they died a lot more thirty years ago, and younger. We have three fantastic dogs, Dragonslayer, Destiny and Dakota. They were all finished by 14 months, the males were dead by three years old, that was in 1983. We have lots of dogs living longer, but in the age of communication, we hear more about the ones dying. Look at the veterans class at the national, we used to have an entry of two or three, twenty years ago, and now we have divided it into groups to fit the entry. Don't be tricked by what you hear, look at the 13 club, talk to Fred, the Fords, Rinke, Tedi, Twyla, or those who are breeding. Yes, we do have problems and yes you do have to be careful the lines you use. But, like so many other things we continue to improve the breed, and longevity is one of the improvements.
