You all say it so well and some of you do it so well. The nay sayers are just
that and they are everywhere. If they don't get instant gratification they are
not happy. I loved it when you brought into words "the guardians of the breed"
for that is all that we are. We do not own them, we borrow them from whatever
created us all and then have to return them at one point or another. Just as
we don't "own" land or birds or fish or any other living thing. If you can
make it better, if you can't leave it alone is a motto to think about.
Have a wonderful weekend everybody and hug those hairy kids because their time
with us is always too short.

............ and an apparent misconception as regards the words "pillars of the
breed".
I think those words were used in a post describing a dinner with friends in
California, enjoying one another's company and musing that there might not be
any of those............"pillars of the breed" ....that is.
I asked a source who was a partaker at that dinner.
I actually thought of entitling this post
"Randy's Right"..........
Randy Chestnut is more than right in his observation that "one pillar" holds
up
nothing.
May I suggest to you that there really isn't a category of souls to which that
title applies.
I hope we have already agreed this:
......... to assign that appellation to anyone other than Rittmeister Max would
be truly presumptuous and really less than modest.
("Foundation" is a better word.
We, actually, all of us, speak of our "foundation bitch"........)
So, scratch the word "pillar" in this context.
Our dogs are a gift............
given us........as part of a legacy from other breeding programs.
I also think that a beautiful sound German Shepherd Dog is a lovely display of
God's common grace to mankind.
Scratch the word "pillar" in this context. May we please begin with our
"founding father" of the breed, Rittmeister Max von Stephanitz.........?
He was, indeed, a man who had "caught the vision" of what could and should be.
Here is an extremely important concept to grasp when breeding quality German
Shepherd Dogs:
Every good dog and every breeder is the accumulate result of an outstanding and
long cavalcade of exceptional dogs and perceptive breeders who came before them.
That is to say.....with the poet John Donne.......
"No man is an island"...........and neither is a good German Shepherd Dog.
We always need to acknowledge, with deep gratitude, the breeders who have
preceded us. They have given us the foundations and the "building blocks" to
continue on with enthusiasm and integrity.
If we are to be "guardians" of the breed, then it is imperative for us to be
students of the breed, studying with care, the dogs, breeders and pedigrees
that
have brought us to the present and to the place where we are now.
And, of course, we need to be very careful with the heritage and legacy which
has been given us.
Why?
Because we have a duty and obligation to those who come after us.
We are all a part of the cavalcade.
I could list here, for your consideration, the names of all those dedicated
souls who have helped you and me. The list would be too long.
Suffice to say, many hands and hearts have helped us all.
Fred Migliore told me many years ago, when my husband and I arrived at his door
step to breed to his Ch. Eko-lan's Shiloh in Michigan, this:
"each one teach one"............
Like all good teachers, Fred told me what he was going to tell
me.............then he told me.............and then he told me what he had just
told me.
Repeat, repeat,repeat.
It was true then, and is true now.
The challenge was ...and it still is........for every individual to be
discerning.
To whom shall we listen? Who will teach me?
And why?
Betty Radzevich asked me, (more years ago than either she or I will admit
to).......
"Do you really want to breed German Shepherd Dogs? Why? Why do you want to
breed
this bitch to Ch. Primas Flying?"
Wouldn't you like to start with a better bitch than this one?"
I needed to answer those questions.
