WITH THE MESSY FIRING of Los Angeles Animal Services general manager=20
Guerdon H. Stuckey, the extremist protesters who mounted a=20
demoralizing battle against him got their way, and more. They got an=20
Animal Services Department that will be further weakened and divided=20
by revolving-door leadership. They also stained Mayor Antonio =20
Villaraigosa. No matter what the reasons for his dismissal of=20
Stuckey, he will be seen as capitulating to people who express their=20
disapproval with smoke grenades, bomb threats, midnight=20
telephone "pranks" and vandalism at the homes of Animal Services=20
employees and public officials. =20

Villaraigosa's appointee to replace Stuckey, former New York animal =20
services chief Ed Boks, comes to the job knowing that if he does =20
something to which the radical Animal Defense League and an even=20
more radical underground group, the Animal Liberation Front, object,=20
his home too may be targeted. Welcome to the neighborhood.

Mainstream animal rights groups have tentatively praised Boks, who=20
during two years in New York advocated for less euthanasia and more=20
adoptions. But their welcome is muted by the circumstances. If they=20
show too much glee at Stuckey's dismissal (which he has said he may=20
fight), they may be lumped in with the extremists.

During his mayoral campaign, Villaraigosa promised animal rights=20
groups that, if elected, he would fire Stuckey. He was responding to =20
criticism that the city's spay-and-neuter program was stumbling and=20
the euthanasia rate at its shelters was too high.

But the criticism didn't stop with words. Protesters picketed=20
Stuckey's residence, and someone planted a smoke bomb in the hallway=20
of his apartment building. His and other managers' addresses were=20
posted on an animal rights website, prompting the city attorney's=20
office Friday to file low-level conspiracy charges.

Before Stuckey there was Jerry Greenwalt, who left Animal Services=20
after two years. His home had been picketed, and "murderer" was =20
spray-painted on his car.=20

As for Boks, he will have to prove himself to the 149 employees who=20
protested Stuckey's dismissal with a letter saying the mayor=20
capitulated to "terrorists," casting a pall over the department and=20
the city.=20

Villaraigosa, whose own home was picketed after he initially refused=20
to fire Stuckey, argues that the dismissal came only after he=20
demanded and got an end to the protests. Boks may even be just the =20
right person for this godforsaken job.=20

But what happens if =E2=80=94 or more likely when =E2=80=94 Boks makes the=20=
Animal=20
Defense League unhappy? Does it get to drive him out and demand St.=20
Francis of Assisi?=20
