These post brought back memories. Particularly since on Feb. 20th I thought of years past and my foundation bitch who was whelped on 2-20-1967 at Tucker Hill Kennel. She was from Cappy and Jean's " G" litter. We named her Gretina. She finished her championship and a CD. More than that she was just the best tempered dog, intelligent, a wonderful brood bitch, our foundation. She always seemed so easy going and even tempered we often joked about her helping any robber carry out the family silver and kissing them goodbye. She proved us wrong. One very hot summer evening we had the screen doors open and latched when a strange car drove up. A man got out of the car and came to the door to ask directions, he was looking for the VA hospital . I explained to him where he needed to go etc. He persisted in acting confused about my directions, so I unlatched the looked screen, stepped onto the porch to point which way etc. and he grabbed my wrist. All this time "Tina" was sitting back watching, until then, she immediately sprang through the door and he just barely got his A** in the car and sped down the driveway before she nailed him. My husband had fallen asleep watching TV in the family room, and missed the whole thing. He woke up as Tina began barking, but wasn't really awake enough to find out why. I will always have a dog in the house, dog hair or not. I have one now who is given the command "watch" when I walk early in the morning. She moves her head from side to side like a 'beacon' taking everything in as she watches, and she alerts to everything. Occasionally we will met a jogger running towards us, she alerts a watches silently. The jogger crosses the street, when they see how closely they are being watched by my 4 legged friend. I have no doubts, that this great, (many generation's of great) granddaughter of Gretina would protect me. In the past I have been the victim of two attempted armed robberies, oh how I wished I had one of my dogs with me then. Fortunately for me, I was able to avoid serious injury the first time and they second time the robber walked away. I didn't have a dog with me, but there is no question (in my mind) that I was being watched over.
