Tough words one would think. Fighting words for those of the HSUS that are there. I don't think I have been living under a rock. I take the phrase of "The Preservation of Purebred Dogs" very seriously. Members of our national rescue have been repeatedly turned away by HSUS workers with harsh words. "There are more dogs here to be helped than just your breed", "You people are partly to blame for this mess", and "We don't want you here" are just a few of the comments that were directed at us. All the while we have been trying to find out how we can retrieve brachycephalic dogs from the heat and chaotic environment of Lamar-Dixon. This is the second or third time I've seen this posted. First. let me say that I was never so proud of the members of 'da GSD list as in the days leading up to Katrina. Blanket invitations were issued for people and dogs to come and stay for as long as needed. Afterwards, monies and supplies were sent, volunteers went, and it is wonderful to see and hear about. I sat through the show on AP Friday night re the animal rescue operation. It was clear to me that animal rescuers faced the same problems as everyone else getting to the city offering aid; no chain of command, streets dangerous due to looting. In short order, it seemed to me the temporary shelters were packed, volunteers were overwhelmed, huge outfits like Houston SPCA were taking animals by the hundreds, somewhere along the line the city/state said the animals had to be held/health cleared and owners given a chance to reclaim before transport then reversed the order. There was a rush to photograph and catalog rescued animals so wherever possible, they could be reclaimed by their owners. Vets worked on front porches. In the middle of this, if a breed rescue came in and wanted to take (only) THEIR dogs I think I'd have to shake them! I just love when Mr. Essary says (quoting) "I take the phrase of "The Preservation of Purebred Dogs" very seriously." What BUNK! These are people's beloved pets for God's sakes. A purebred dog doesn't go to the head of the line! And just how does this become an AKC problem? (Pallets and pallets of food, water, crates, medical supplies were shown on the program Friday evening. The AKC wasn't alone in that effort, but they are a big part of it, and the supplies weren't designated "for the preservation of purebred dogs".) It's the responsibility of the owners, NOT the AKC, not the rescue organizations, not FEMA, not the National Guard, but the OWNERS to care for their animals and keep them safe. Now, how silly is that when many people weren't able to care for themselves and/or their children? I understand that's pie in the sky wishful "let them eat cake" thinking, but pointing fingers at the AKC and the large groups that were first on the scene, clogging up the works, no matter how imperfect a system may be perceived to be is a bit of misplaced frustration, don't you think?
