But, the excused dog wasn't defeated. To win points in most venues, one
must DEFEAT a predetermined number of dogs.

Subject: Jack loses a CH point
At one of the herding trials in Texas last month, one of the dogs took a
sheep down. It was the last run of the day. The sheep wasn't seriously
injured, but it took 4 or 5 people to get the dog to let go & allow the
sheep up. The judge excused the dog. The judge realized that if the dog
was excused, and not just removed, the major would be broken. Thinking
that it was unfair to penalize all dogs because of the actions of one,
the judge changed the excusal to removal. I heard today that AKC
wouldn't allow the judge to change the excusal to removal and
re-instated the dog's excusal.
In the rule book, it states "Dogs that are absent, excused or
disqualified by a Judge at a trial shall not be considered as having
been in competition when determining championship points." I can
understand absent dogs not being included in the determining CH points,
the dog wasn't there!
Excused dogs & disqualified dogs WERE there and had to be excused or
disqualified by the judge, so in a way they were judged....
Anyway, the dog's excusal broke the major, and Jack lost one of his CH
points. He's now 6 points away from an HCh.
