And, BTW...
The carrier rate in GSDs when the test was made commercial was 10%!!! That
the test has been available for a little over 10 years now, and so few
people test, I wonder what our current carrier rate is ???
The collie people (and the Aussie breeders too) unwittingly spread this
gene around their breeds until it became almost fixed in their population;
with carrier rates of 75% and almost 1/3 of their breeds affected....
Something this test can prevent.
It costs $60/dog when paid for online at time of order and is well worth it!
The ABCB1/MDR1 gene affects about 20 drugs; including loperamide (Immodium)
and also chemotherapy drugs...
Also, being an autosomal recessive, informed breeding makes it easy to
avoid the gene in the next generations. :)

A genetic test is now available that indicates whether or not a dog has the
MDR1 mutation. Veterinarians recommend that owners of herding-breed dogs
have this simple test performed on their pets. The test involves a small
brush that is quickly swiped in the dog's mouth, with the sample then sent
to a testing lab at Washington State University.
