Terry who is too long in the woods.

Our 4 GSD's all live in the house, so we keep them pretty clean.  They have no
"doggie" odor.  The only thing I use on them is a brush or rake.

Anyhow, their heads all smell different.  One smells like popcorn.  One smells
like maple syrup.  One smells like a pine forest.  (We don't have any pines
near us.)  The last dog's head has a nice clean scent that is hard to
describe.  Perhaps I can't recognize the scent because this dog is from
Germany???   <G>

Most of you will probably think I'm nuts, but have you smelled your dogs' heads
lately?  If so, what do they smell like?

I had asked about the scented noses of an Afghan.   I relayed a  story of a
friend of mine who showed me one of her breeding over 30 years  ago that
had a flower like smell to the head.  I got laughed at by  some on the List.
It was because we do tend to lose traits as they are bred out  of the breed.
But, then these traits come back later, (such as the white  shepherd)

This is the most interesting response I got from an Afghan breeder.

Yes, we have 'Scented afghans"  They are almost gone for some  reason, It
is an odor around the tthe top of the head or aroudn the ears... they  are
referred to as scented.. often it is described as Jasmine some call it
sandalwood.....it has nothign to do with the noses...I have had some.. one
thing
I do fin that still lingers in  the breed is the lovely smell some of them
have...afghans rarely smell doggie.. but many of mine still linger in my
mind by  their particular smell...
a peculiar breed to say the least... with the weird  temperament and
personalities, and the strange coat pattern... all of which is  being bred
right
out them faster  than we can hope to preserve it... but  taht is why I do
what I do with my lines.. it is a program of  preservation...

Nothing is more interesting than life and learning new things.
