Incredibly sweet 6 month old in need of rescue. Researching for German Shepherd rescue on the Internet, I came across each and every e-mail address that I could find hoping that someone may be able to help us help a very special female German Shepherd that came into the vet clinic where I work on Friday. She was brought in by her owner after missing for 2 days. When the owner came home from work, she found her dog had somehow made her way home with a hind leg dangling and a deep puncture wound on her hip. How she made it back to her house was a miracle to us at the clinic, but after seeing how well this girl got around even later that night despite her severe injuries made it clear that she has a deep desire to live and love. We carried "Lady" into the treatment area where Dr Fonti immediately gave her pain medication, an antibiotic injection and fluids to treat her shock while assessing her injuries. As Dr. Fonti discussed the severity of the case with her owner, the owner cried because she knew that she could not afford to pay for the extensive care she needed. Dr. Fonti and I were both so touched by Lady and her will to live that we asked the owner if she would be willing to surrender her to us so that we could at least give her the chance that she had already fought for. Amidst all of her awful injuries, Lady never offered to bite or resist our help, not even a growl which in my opinion would have been well justified. Once she was more stable, we x-rayed her chest and pelvis and found that her femur was fractured in 7 places beyond repair. She also had a few fractures in her pelvis and a couple broken ribs. The good news was that her broken ribs did not appear to do any damage to her lungs. We left work on Friday evening praying that she would make it through the night. Dr. Fonti (who is a relief veterinarian for our clinic) and I decided to meet Saturday after work to talk about what we were going to do next. Dr Fonti consulted with several other vets in the area and the consensus was that amputation of her hind left leg was the best option. Dr. Fonti arranged the surgery at one of her friends animal hospitals on Saturday evening and the surgery went very well. I am attaching four pictures that were taken after her surgery. Dr. Fonti and I are both chipping in what we can, but as you can imagine the costs of her x-rays,surgery, pain medication, and antibiotics are quickly accumulating. Lady is still very sweet to all humans despite the trauma she has experienced in her very young life. She has a lot of energy, and is eating and drinking normally. Dr. Fonti plans to take her home from the animal hospital this evening. ( We're not sure if she likes cats yet, but we will find out soon as Dr Fonti has several cats and dogs of her own at home!) We need 1) financial help to help pay for her medical care so far and 2) a forever home for Lady that has the time and financial freedom to have her spayed and any possible future medical care. She needs to be in a sling when walked and cage rested as much as possible until her pelvis is a little more stable. With a fractured pelvis and the extra stress on her right hind leg, she is likely to have some arthritis in her right hip some day. Please, if you know of anyone that might be able to help us in any way feel free to pass this email on. Thank you so much!
