After outcry, city will consider alternatives to catch-and-kill plan

City officials have decided to do a bit more homework before moving
forward on a cat-control ordinance after a preliminary catch-and-kill
plan sparked howls of opposition.
At Monday's City Council meeting, Mayor Robert Weber gave aldermen
copies of detailed ordinances enacted by two other area communities.
He also gave them information on the option of a "trap, neuter,
release" plan for feral cats that are not considered adoptable.
"I'm suggesting you take this material and read it in some detail,"
Weber told them. "Please take it, read it and come back with your
suggestions."
The city finds itself in this position after responding to complaints
from a few residents about stray cats by drafting preliminary
ordinance language under which cats not bearing clear identification
would be caught and immediately euthanized. Weber said Monday the
complaints had dealt only with two specific areas in different parts
of town.
